the AU interview: Psychic Medium John Edward (USA) talks "Evolve", skeptics and his upcoming Australian visit

The AU's Katelyn Rew had the chance to meet infamous pyschic medium John Edward, ahead of his tour in Australia in November. The two talk about his abilities, his project "Evolve" - for which he's touring Australia - address skeptics, and the growth in popularity and acceptance of psychics in contemporary media.

How old were you when you first realised you had psychic abilities?

I was 15 years old and I had a reading. The woman that did my reading recognised my psychic abilities and put me on my path.

You act as a medium and connect people with their passed loved ones, but do you ever get messages or signs when you’re alone?

All the time! When I’m meditating I have my own team of energies that guide me from the other side. I work with them often, and they give me messages about my family and my business. They tell me what I should and shouldn’t be doing.

Do you find that messages are stronger when you see people, or do they come through just as strong when you’re chatting to people on the phone or radio?

I get them just as strong over the phone as I do in person or via email. Think about it this way, If I say that I have your dad or your grandfather here, it’s because he’s with you, not with me.

Tell me a little bit about your project ‘Evolve’

Evolve is what I started when I left conventional television. It’s an online community where people pay to belong, and they get access to a weekly show, as well as access to events, answered questions, and online content. Five people a month get private readings, tickets to events, and questions answered. It’s a very interactive online community.

You’ve written 8 New York times best sellers, had your own t.v show, radio show, and been on a variety of talk shows, what has been a career highlight for you so far?

All of them to be honest, and any opportunity where I've met people. Meeting Whoopi Goldberg was great, she’s one of my favourite people on the planet because she was in the movie Ghost, meeting her was really cool. Being on Oprah was also an amazing experience. All the opportunities that I’ve had have been highlights, I appreciate every one of them.

Do you believe psychic abilities are passed on from generation to generation?

I do believe there is a genetic predisposition to it. I have two kids that are extremely psychic. The freak gene has definitely been passed down.

How do you deal with skeptics?

I think honestly I recognise the fact that they exist. However, there are two different categories. There’s scepticism that I encourage and I tell people everywhere that they need to be sceptical about the subject matter because there are many people that claim to do this work. Some may have the ability, but they don't understand what they’re doing, and that’s equally as dangerous as someone that’s a fraud and a charlatan. I think it’s important to be aware of who you’re sitting with and to be skeptical of the experience. The second category are the cynics who call themselves skeptics. They’re not really skeptical as they’ve already made up their mind that they’re not going to shift their belief system, or shift the fact that they don't have a believe system. They are usually atheist or agnostic and they come from that place of ‘I don't believe’. Their actually belief system is to choose not to have one. So those people I don't really deal with. But to the people who are skeptical, I think that’s important, I encourage it.

Do you find that people are much more open to psychics now than they used to be?

I think the answer is yes. We’re definitely in a different place on the planet society wise, and I think we have evolved as a culture where people are looking to become more self empowered. If we look at organised religion today It’s probably at Its lowest attendance across the board. I think people are looking for their own level of connection and their own level of empowerment. People are interested in not just psychic abilities, but also energy in general and to feel more connected. Technology has shown that with Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, Vine, all these ways that people are now connecting. The technological connection is equal to I think a spiritual connection. I just try to get people to flip that switch and recognise it as such.

Tell me a little bit about what people can expect when you tour Australia in November.

When I come to Australia in November every event that I do will be completely different. If someone came to every city and watched every event, they would see a completely different one every time. The events are really about the audience, so whoever the audience brings with them from the other side becomes what that event is about. We try and raise awareness, teach, and try to empower people with information at the beginning, then concentrate on whatever reading happens. I tell people the event is not about the reading, It’s about experiencing the reading. So even if you’re not the one that's being read, you get the experience of being part of that connection.
