WITCH HATS

Live Review: Battles + Witch Hats + Other Places - The Forum (28.01.12)

There was a thing at this gig that became curiously weird; Battles, a mainly instrumental band using new styles of music composition were playing in a venue with old concrete walls. Walking into particular areas of The Forum and then smelling an odour of dampness was peculiar for a place that looked hugely grandiose from the outside (although I’ve been in venues that have smelt worse). If it was a person, The Forum would be with growing old with dignity as rather than getting painful facelifts to retain its youth.

Live Review: Harmony + Witch Hats - Phoenix Public House (17.12.11)

The Phoenix Public House is quickly becoming my favourite band room in town with their cheap liquor selection and eclectic mix of both local and international talents that grace the stage. Saturday night they played host to two of the more interesting acts that operate far outside the boundaries of Triple J’s far reaching, commercially driven bubble.

Witch Hats - Pleasure Syndrome (2011 LP)

Guttural, abrasive, bordering on obnoxious. If I had been asked to describe the music of Melbourne quartet Witch Hats 18 months ago, these are the words I'd have said. Don't get me wrong, these adjectives are all still valid, only this time with the release of their second full-length album Pleasure Syndrome, they are so much more.

Music Video Monday feat. Bon Iver, Jebediah, Witch Hats, The Vasco Era, Dead Letter Chorus, Damn Terran, Sietta, Ben Salter, The Dead Leaves, Lady Gaga and FreeSol

...and we're off! A massive Music Video Monday for you today - once again published minutes before the day is over... but this is so jam packed you'll understand why! First up is our music video of the week: Bon Iver and "Holocene". Maintaining the snow/ice theme of our winner last week, the video - directed by Aussie Nabil Elderkin - is a stunner. And that doesn't even pay mention to the beautiful song that encompasses it.
