Hello Asia! Live Review: YouTube FanFest Sydney – Qantas Credit Union, Sydney (11.09.15)

The screams started at 4:30pm for the red carpet and didn’t stop until the end of the two and a half hour 2015 YouTube FanFest, as (mostly pre-teen) fans clamoured for their favourite YouTubers. If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you translate Internet personalities, whose domain is usually the computer screen, into real life, the result is an engaging, interactive experience that is good-natured fun for everybody.

K-pop groups BIGBANG and 2NE1 have joined Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Sam Smith and plenty of other notable artists on the list of winners for YouTube's 2015 YouTube Music Awards (YTMA).

Sheppard, Dan Sultan, 5SOS and Sia lead 2015 APRA Music Award nominations with multiple nods!

Today, the 2015 APRA Music Award nominees were announced, with some Australian songwriters emerging as particular hot contenders, nabbing multiple nominations. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the likes of Sia and 5 Seconds of Summer jumped off the page, both with three nominations to their name, while the Brisbane pop juggernaut that has become Sheppard lead the pack at four nom's.

What does the rise of the YouTuber as a multi-modal celebrity mean for pop culture?

At its core, YouTube remains the same as when it launched nine years ago; a site designed for everyday people to easily share videos online. It is now an enormous media platform that enables people to broadcast themselves to the world. And, with the right amount of skill, smarts and luck, users can tour the world, be granted great opportunities, become online celebrities and earn hundreds of thousands of dollars from their online presence – they are known as YouTubers.
