Live Review: Edmonton Folk Music Festival Day Three ft. Richard Thompton + Lucius + The Milk Carton Kids and more! (08.08.15)

Richard Thompson performs while The Milk Carton Kids look on...

Our third day started off on stage three with the phenomenal "Define Folk" session, featuring Oysterband, Richard Thompson, Geoff Muldaur and Amos Garrett and The Milk Carton Kids. We arrived just in time for Geoff Muldaurs' delivery of "Tennessee Blues", which had a beautiful heartfelt country blues feel to it, before Richard Thompson went on to sing a gentle Celtic folk song accompanied by a rich swirl of strings.

Live Review: The Milk Carton Kids + Melody Pool - Factory Theatre (06.04.13)

The Milk Carton Kids from California are nothing short of truly incredible. After years of playing and struggling in the music industry separately, Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale met just over two years ago and started making music. And what delight to the ears their music is. Their show on Tuesday 4th June at the Factory Theatre in Sydney was their first ever show in Australia, so it was surprising to see that the venue was only two thirds full. Opening for the duo was Melody Pool, a solo artist from the Hunter Valley.

Indie folk duo The Milk Carton Kids played their first ever Sydney show this week. One of our favourite acts from SXSW this year, the duo from Eagle Rock, California mixed gorgeous harmonies, skillful guitars and a very dry sense of humour to their show. Photos by Johnny Au

CLOSED Win a double pass to see The Milk Carton Kids!

‘Authentic’ and ‘timeless’ are two words that convey a lot of importance in the world of Americana country music. Being true to the values and aesthetics of one’s forebears in the rich lineage of the genre is a cherished trait, as important as possessing good songs and the players exhibiting a strong chemistry.

the AU interview: Joey Ryan from The Milk Carton Kids (California)

Despite several US tours, one Europe tour, an upcoming tour of Australia, numerous appearances on festivals line-ups and three full length albums in the space of two years, Joey Ryan from The Milk Carton Kids says this is really only the beginning. If this is the case, and things continue along the same strain as the past couple years for the Milk Carton Kids, don’t be surprised if in two years if the band has taken control of the entire music world. The AU review got to chat to Joey about the new album The Ash & Clay, touring the world and music writing.

SXSW 2013 Live Review: Iron and Wine + Devendra Banhart + The Milk Carton Kids + WALL. - Central Presbyterian Church (16.03.13)

With Prince a no go, Justin Timberlake a pipe dream and an overload of fantastic rock and roll making up the vast majority of my SXSW Music experience (and how!), it wasn't the obvious choice to go see The Smashing Pumpkins, either. I also wasn't overly willing to stand through a pile of pop acts at the Perez Hilton party just to catch Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. So, I went for something a bit more relaxed. A chance to sit down after a week of dancing, moshing, and an overall nine day experience that made me want to cut off my sore, sore feet. Yes ladies and gentleman, on the night that everyone who was anyone was performing in the city of Austin, I went to Church.
