THE 5.6.7.8'S

Live Review: The 5.6.7.8's + La Mancha Negra + Mother & Son - Oxford Art Factory, Sydney (24.01.13)

Admittedly, half-past-eight isn't exactly what most people would deem the best time to get decidedly loose. That said, Wollongong expatriates Mother & Son are about as far from “most people” as you can get without venturing into animal species. The two-piece make a kind of snarling, twangy blues-rock that exists outside of trends, popularity contests and instant accessibility. It's slurred and snarled rather than sung, chopped at rather than played with proficiency. Within the live context, it's just a little faster, just a little looser, just a little more wild-eyed. In other words, it has the power to remind you exactly what drew you into the world of rock music to begin with. It was a near-perfect way to kick off proceedings.
