SHAMIR

Album Review: Shamir - Ratchet (2015 LP)

“I am not fine art, I am the doodle in your copybook: simple but never posed,” reads one of the statements Shamir posted on Tumblr in support of debut album Ratchet. Appropriately, the cover of the album features a doodle of the artist himself, surrounded by Haring-esque swirling lines. At twenty years of age, Shamir is enthusiastic to share his insights, but he never intends for it to be at the expense of fun. And the fun is not lacking: the dance-pop record effortlessly incorporates elements of rap, nu-disco and future-pop, leaving no room for a dull moment.

US broadcaster NPR returned to SXSW with their annual NPR Music Showcase at Stubb's BBQ, again highlighting some of the best talent on display in Austin. We saw a diverse variety of artists who performed including Compton bred rapper Boogie, Las Vegas disco and funk (with a hint of androgyny) Shamir, Aussie indie darling Courtney Barnett, Belgian electronic/hip hop artist Stromae and one of the hardest working bands out there, TV On The Radio (pictured above). The event has long been known for being a platform for up and coming acts to draw in a larger fan base, to turn industry heads and to then go on to form larger international profiles for themselves and just by taking a sweeping look at the sheer amount of talent on the SXSW Music line up this year, we can safely say the class of 2015 is going to follow suit. Below are just five artists I'm going to be checking out in coming weeks...

NPR always has its finger on the pulse when it comes to pulling together some of the best names in music, both established and up and coming, for its SXSW line up. They've just announced the artists confirmed to perform at their opening night event at Stubb's this year and as we'd expect, the menu of music on offer is looking sweet indeed.
