Live Review: Phosphorescent - Oxford Art Factory, Sydney (14.12.14)

It never ceases to amaze me how some bands manage to stay far below the radar of the average music fan. In spite of no less than six critically acclaimed full length records, international touring (including a visit to Australia for Harvest Festival back in 2011) and ticking all the boxes that an "underground success story" seems to need to require - great songs, consistency, lack of commercialism - Phosphorescent are one of those bands who have done just that. Though in front of an almost sold out Oxford Art Factory crowd, you never would have known it. And maybe that's just as it should be.

Phosphorescent played a rapturous set to a packed room at the Oxford Art Factory last night, in what was their final show off the back of their 2013 release Muchacho. Dan Turner was there and brings us these photos from the night:

the AU's Weekend Gig Guide: December 12th - December 14th

We've taken a look at some of the shows we're going to be heading to this weekend and deliver you this guide!

5 Songs you must listen to before Phosphorescent's (New York) Australian tour!

Phosphorescent, aka Brooklyn-based musician Matthew Houck, first began winning hearts in Australia back in 2011 when he first performed out this way as part of the Harvest Festival. Fusing psych and indie tones with a well-crafted country-tinged rock sound, Phosphorescent has become a festival favourite throughout the US and with his latest album, 2014's Muchacho, Houck stands to be one of the highlights of the upcoming Meredith Festival this December! Before he makes his way back over, we've put together a bit of a guide for you in case you're going to be seeing him for the first time - five of our fave Phosphorescent tracks.

Phosphorescent announces Australian headline dates for December!

One of the stand out artists we saw when we were at Lollapalooza is set to take to the Meredith Supernatural Ampitheatre and now, select stages around Australia! Phosphorescent was in Australia last in 2011 and from there, the seeds of a great relationship between the country-tinged indie rock artist and Australian fans were properly planted. With six studio records under his belt, Phosphorescent is currently riding the way of what is being lauded as his best effort yet, Muchacho. Trust us, these live shows aren't to be missed.

Ty Segall, Phosphorescent, Ghostface Killah and more join the Meredith Festival line up!

The Meredith Festival has once again made those who've entered the official ticket ballot incredibly hyped for the chance of landing themselves passes and everyone else who can't be at the December festival fiercely jealous, with the reveal of their 2014 artist announcement! Joining The War on Drugs is a line up of Australian and international artists Meredith describes as a result of 'dreaming longer', 'going further' and 'listening longer'.

Festival Review: Lollapalooza (Day Two) ft. The Temper Trap + Grouplove + Foster the People + Outkast - Grant Park, Chicago (02.08.14)

Day Two of Lolla started later for a lot of people, I gathered, with Friday night's aftershow/party antics continuing well on into the early hours of Saturday morning. Nursing a Red Bull, I arrived back at Grant Park on Saturday afternoon to a party which was already well cranked.

Top 40 Albums of 2013: Part Two - 30 to 21

It's day two of our best of 2013 coverage and we're jumping right back into our favourite albums of 2013. Yesterday we delivered 40 to 31 and so today let's hit into the top 30, kicking off with one of our favourite up-and-coming Australian groups, The Trouble with Templeton.

Album Review: Phosphorescent - Muchacho (2013 LP)

Phosphorescent’s Muchacho is an album which sets the bar high, only to decide it doesn't really like high jump all that much and proceeds to walk straight under that bar on its way to go and try out some shot-put.

The Festival Diaries: Harvest in Brisbane and the 4ZZZ iPhone Experiment.

It may not have been one of my international excursions. It may not have even lasted 24 hours. But my trip to the Brisbane leg of the Harvest "gatherings" turned out to be one of my most memorable musical expeditions to date.
