OUTKAST

Splendour Spotlight: Reflecting on OutKast at Splendour In The Grass

It has been a little over a week since Atlanta luminaries OutKast descended upon Australia and to give a rare performance as the headliners of Splendour In The Grass, bringing with them that air of exclusivity that had led me to believe that I'd never actually get the chance to see them live. Before their reunion was announced, I would have thought that if seeing them live was actually possible, then it would probably be an embittering and disappointing affair, given the legends of hip hop usually indulge themselves in a quick, vapid medley performance of their hits. I feel stupid for ever doubting them.

Perri Cassie returns for day two of Lollapalooza in Chicago, bringing us back photos of headliners Outkast alongside Cage The Elephant, Foster The People, Grouplove, Kate Nash, Parquet Courts, Australia's The Temper Trap and many more!

Festival Review: Lollapalooza (Day Two) ft. The Temper Trap + Grouplove + Foster the People + Outkast - Grant Park, Chicago (02.08.14)

Day Two of Lolla started later for a lot of people, I gathered, with Friday night's aftershow/party antics continuing well on into the early hours of Saturday morning. Nursing a Red Bull, I arrived back at Grant Park on Saturday afternoon to a party which was already well cranked.

Splendour Spotlight: 12 of our favourite performances from Splendour In The Grass 2014

The sound waves from Splendour In The Grass 2014 will be felt for a while, especially on a national scale as some of the weekend's greatest performances came from locals who took full advantage of the massive platform. Special anniversary performances from OutKast and Spiderbait, an emotional set from The Jezabels, and sets from Violent Soho and Phantogram, amongst others, really kicked things up a notch for Splendour, giving punters one of the best additions of the annual event. Chris was on ground to run around the festival and witness just some of these great performances; here are 10 of his favourites. Unfortunately, he is but one person, so much talked about sets from the likes of Childish Gambino, Hilltop Hoods, Tune-Yards, REMi and Angus & Julia Stone are not included.

Festival Review: Splendour In The Grass (Day One) Ft. OutKast + Interpol + Spiderbait (25.07.14)

The official first day of Splendour In The Grass 2014 set things into motion quite quickly, with punters flooding into the sun-kissed North Byron Parklands as soon as the gates opened, quickly spreading amongst the pop-up community which this great festival has now become. From The Preatures and Ball Park Music to the 25th anniversary of Spiderbait and the 20th anniversary of the almighty OutKast, we were treated to a consistently excellent stream of live performances, and this was only on the main stage.

Outkast helped kick off the first day of live music at Splendour in the Grass 2014 in Byron Bay, with Interpol, Childish Gambino and many, many more from Australia and around the world. Ian Laidlaw was there and brings us these photos from the event:

Splendour In The Grass Guide: A Hip-Hop Fan's Timetable

Splendour In The Grass has unofficially already begun, with many punters currently staking their claim in the campgrounds and setting the pace for the next couples of days. Thursday night will see Splendour punters party either in the venue with a slew of DJ's - including the boys from Halfway Crooks, Indian Summer, and Joyride (we hear Raph Dixon from Jackie Onassis might be pulling a surprise set as well)- or heading to town to attend the official pre-party at The Northern headlined by Interpol.

Chet Faker included on the lineup for San Francisco's Treasure Island Festival!

The full line-up for San Francisco's Treasure Island Festival has been announced! The two day festival is held at an island that is (seriously) called Treasure Island, with headliners OutKast and Massive Attack taking the helm for both nights. Melbourne's own Chet Faker has been announced on the line-up, which also includes TV on the Radio, The New Pornographers, Alt-J and Janelle Monáe. Treasure Island takes place from 18-19 October, and the rest of the gem-studded line-up is below.

The Festival Diaries: The Governor's Ball in New York City (Part One: Day One, 2014)

Are we gonna be the oldest people there? Asks my friend Annie. We've just spent the last two hours trying to get our old bums out of the house, organizing a combination of stimulants and alcohol with, you know, sunscreen and earplugs. That's right, #grownupshit. Our cab drivers take forever to sync with one another but the sun is shining, the clouds are so fluffy you want to eat them, and most importantly, my phone is charged within a percentage of its life so we can actually spread the joy to you over the seas.

The Music That Made Us: Mind Over Matter (Sydney)

This time last week, Sydney hip hop outfit Mind Over Matter released their anticipated new album This Way To Elsewhere. We sat down with the band for an interview today which you'll be able to see on the AU soon, but we also wanted to get an idea of the music that influenced them. In response, they delivered these five tracks as an entry for our series "The Music That Made Us".

It's Summer Up There! A Festival Guide on Lollapalooza 2014.

Lollapalooza, one of America’s biggest summer festivals, will be running again this August, and as per usual, it’s got a hell of a lineup. Rap god Eminem, will be joined by massive acts such as the reunited Outkast, Kings of Leon, Artic Monkeys and Lorde. The quality isn’t simply top heavy, with an array of impressive acts spreading all the way down the bill and even a few Australian acts will be flying the flag for us including Iggy Azalea, The Temper Trap, and Courtney Barnett.

5 Acts Not to Miss at The Governor's Ball Music Festival in New York City next weekend!

It’s finally – FINALLY – warming up in New York City after a winter from hell, and suddenly the notion that festival season has begun doesn't seem so bizarre after all. As citydwellers return from their Memorial Day weekends of Mysteryland and EDC fun, the trace remnants of glitter and mud remind us all that there is a world out there, and it is full of fantastic music.

Feature: OutKast will be in top shape come Splendour In The Grass

Eric B & Rakim had the flow; Mobb Deep had the ambience; UGK had the character; 8Ball & MJG had the chemistry; Gang Starr had the depth; and EPMD had the style. But there has never been a hip hop duo quite like OutKast. The eccentric Andre 3000 and the lyrically dextrous Big Boi will forever be the quintessential experimental rap duo that put Atlanta on the map and opened the flood gates for the left-field sounds coming from the South. In an era when gangster and mafiaso rap were bounced back and forth between the East and West Coasts, OutKast completely flipped hip hop on it's head.

New York Festival The Governor's Ball announces Oukast, The Strokes, Jack White and more for 2014!

The lineup for this year’s Governor’s Ball Festival has been announced, and boy is it something else. The New York City festival held on Randall’s island includes a slew of mouth-watering names for the June event. A freshly reunited Outkast headline the event alongside Jack White, Vampire Weekend and New York City’s very own darlings, The Strokes.

Courtney Barnett, Vance Joy, High Highs and The Griswolds join Foo Fighters and Outkast at Firefly Festival 2014!

In June, Delaware is going to be playing host to some of the biggest names in popular music at the moment, with the Firefly Festival taking place in the woodlands of the Dover International Speedway (June 19-22). Headlined this year by Foo Fighters, Outkast and Jack Johnson, the festival is bringing together many different artists for one hell of a bunch of live music performances...think of an American Splendour, perhaps. Some Aussies have been place on the bill as well, heading over to further make their mark on the US market.
