Microwave Jenny tell us what to expect from their Courtyard Sessions gig this Friday!

Sydney duo Microwave Jenny are soon to be the latest artists to be showcased at the Seymour Centre’s Courtyard Sessions, performing an unmissable live set this Friday. Tessa and Brendon took some time out from working on prep for the set (not to mention being parents to gorgeous little Molly!) to chat about how their 2015 rolled out and what we can be expecting from their show on Friday. Be sure to get down to the Seymour Centre from 6pm to get amongst it all!

How would you describe your sound?
Poppy, easy listening, lounge, soul. Pop/lounge/soul!

Who do you cite as inspiration?
Paloma Faith.

If we were to listen to one song from your band, what should it be?

“The New Boy in Town”

What can we expect from your set at the Courtyard Sessions?

You can expect a pretty stripped back acoustic show for this set. We’ll be playing pretty much everything we’ve ever done from the very early to the very new. You can also expect an overwhelming urge to buy a CD at the end.

If you could program one Australian artist to be a part of an event like this, who would it be and why?

Eagle and The Wolf. It’s a pretty new project from songwriters Sarah Humphreys and Kris Morris. We’ve just gotten into that show Nashville and we’re out of seasons to watch. The music on the show is awesome especially the alt/country stuff, so having run out of episodes to watch, these guys satisfy our alt/country/folk fix and deserve to be heard by many others.

Fill us in on what you’re up to at the moment?

We’re currently watching Adventure Time and taking care of our brand new baby girl Molly Wattle. Musically and artistically though, we’re busy working away on new material we wrote while we were living in London. We’re also busy working away on following up on the rewards for our Pozible campaign. We crowdfunded our latest EP which were lucky enough to record in London and as a result there’s a bunch of cool stuff we get to do for the fans who helped support us like house concerts and requested covers. We’re also about to start work on making some of our songs into children’s books which we’re super excited about!

What were the highlights for the band in 2015?

Having a baby!

What do you have in store for 2016?

We just finished a surprise recording of a cover that’s been pretty popular at our shows. It’s a favourite of ours and seems to always get asked for by fans, so we decided to get into the studio and see what we could do with it and we’re super happy with it. Anyone who comes to show will know what the song is, others will just have to keep your ears peeled and hopefully it might be released in the near future as a single.

How important are events like this to the local scene?

Well, everyone knows the hardship the local scene is facing at the moment, so any kind of organised event where live music is the focus is great not only for Sydney, but the whole country.

When we moved to London, I was told a stat from a producer over there that on any given night, there was over 4000 spots you could go see live music happening. Here in Australia, the city with the most venues is Melbourne and that sits around the 300 mark, plus not all of those venues have live music happening every night so the opportunity to get up and perform your music in your hometown is slowly turning into gold.
