Album Review: Mia Dyson - Idyllwild (2014 LP)

Following from her critically acclaimed 2012 album The Moment, the much loved Australian singer/songwriter Mia Dyson has returned with Idyllwild, another beautiful album full of fun rock tunes as well as returning to her roots with slower bluesy ballads. Despite being her fifth record, she has created another stunning album that reflects her musical integrity and musical talents.

the AU review presents Mia Dyson performing her track "When We're Older" and "That Sugar" LIVE, acoustic and exclusive for the AU as part of our laneway sessions series. We review 15 Australian bands at Canadian Music Week 2014 in Toronto! Part Two: From Lili Kendall to Mia Dyson.

Following on from my overview of Toronto's CMW for 2014, a review of Broods and a bunch of interviews, photo galleries and tour diaries, it's finally time to get to more of the Australian music at the event. But honestly, I saw too much great Australian music in too little time. Out of the 26 Australian artists in attendance, I managed to catch 15 of them... sometimes only briefly. So, I'm delivering some bite-size reviews! So, alphabetically, here are my thoughts for the next five, from Lili Kendall to Mia Dyson!

Live Review: Mia Dyson + Jep & Dep - The Factory Floor, Sydney (03.04.14)

When Mia Dyson walks on - cutting a lean figure in tight blue pants, short brown hair flopping rock-star like across her face – and launches into the rolling “When The Moment Comes”, a great wave of warmth comes pouring off the stage. It’s bluesy and bruising, pushed forward by Dyson’s muscular guitar chops and the snare rolls of drummer Danny McKenna. The sound is eminently comfortable, so rooted in the traditional that it all feels familiar. Or perhaps Dyson just makes it so.

SXSW Live Review: The Aussie BBQ presented by Sounds Australia - Maggie Mae's (15.03.14)

Undoubtedly one of the biggest, if not the biggest, events of my SXSW calendar had to be the Aussie BBQ. Taking over Maggie Mae's on Saturday, a staggering amount of Australian artists were divided up over three stages inside the venue, set to fly the flag and let the Americans know how good Australia is having it right now as a music and creative industry.
