SXSW Live Music Review: Mansionair + Kate Boy + Kate Tempest - Laneway Festival Showcase, Red 7, Austin (18.03.15)

The sun is scorching in the small, concrete backyard that makes up the outdoor stage for the Laneway Festival Showcase. Sydney band Mansionair is swimming through their set, the clear, the guitars ringing amid the thick hum of synths. It’s the vocals that penetrate through: Lachlan Bostok’s voice spears high and clear through the sheets of synth effects, drawing out his falsetto into luxurious curls. “Second Night” pops with skittish, drum machine percussion, “Morning” delves further into chillwave. It’s single “Hold Me Down” that fully realises Mansionair’s aesthetic – clean, gorgeous sounds, hung on a simple skeleton melody.
