Their debut album Howlin sat happily in the top ten of many a critics end of year lists, including this very publications. Playing to a packed hometown show at Metro Jono Ma and Gabriel Winterfield showed why they were worth every bit the overexcited hyperbole that has been thrown their way.

Live Review: James Blake + Jonti - Sydney Conservatorium of Music (23.03.13)

It’s not often Australians are treated to pre-album tours from international artists – let alone being able to see a big act within 6 months of a release. Promotional tours nowadays are the domain of the superstar, though many would argue we have one here on the rise. James Blake performed two very small shows in Australia just prior to dropping his highly anticipated second album, giving a small selection of people who were quick enough on the blink-and-missed tickets a taste of his current direction.

Live Review: Toro Y Moi + Jonti + Yukon Snakes - The Standard (07.03.13)

Toro Y Moi

Back in January when I asked Chazwick Bundick (the musical brains behind Toro Y Moi) what we could expect from his anticipated Australian tour, he replied: “Expect pyrotechnics and stripper poles with a lazer show and hologram strippers!!! That and four dudes on stage holding it down to the max.” At his sold-out show at Sydney’s The Standard, Bundick did not disappoint. Well, not on the latter statement at least.

Live Review: Action Bronson + Peanut Butter Wolf + Jonti - Manning Bar (12.01.13)

Aside from Wu-Tang there are not many rappers coming to our shores who take hip-hop fans back to the mid-90’s when mafioso rap was at its peak with seminal artists like Kool G Rap, Raekwon, and Ghostface Killah. Over the past few years Action Bronson has quickly amassed a cult following with a handful of acclaimed mixtapes, pitchfork hype, and an overwhelming amount of hipster love; but what really sets the chef-turned-rapper apart from his contemporaries is his delivery, which recalls the ‘golden age’ of East coast hip-hop. Bringing his undeniable talent to Manning Bar with the iconic Peanut Butter Wolf on support, Bronson packed-out the popular uni hangout and gave us an early contender for hip-hop gig of the year.
