FRANK TURNER

Album Review: Frank Turner - Positive Songs For Negative People (2015 LP)

With Frank Turner, you know what you're getting. Sometimes it's fast and upbeat and sometimes it's quite and thoughtful, but it's always that special brand of English folk-punk, in the tradition of Billy Bragg - except that Turner is apparently pretty right-wing. He also has a pretty impressive output for one skinny English dude – Positive Songs For Negative People is his sixth album in eight years.

the AU review's Johnny Au had a sit down chat with English folk artist Frank Turner, looking ahead to the release of his sixth studio record, Positive Songs for Negative People (out in August). In the interview, Frank expresses his frustrations on his early visit to Australia, wanting to tour the country after the record had been released, "This Australian tour was supposed to be the first tour after the record was out. The record isn't out yet so and that's bad," Turner says. "The good news is I'll be back in Australia again before the end of the record cycle so that people can know the new songs."

Despite having suffered from severe jetlag throughout, Frank said of Bluesfest, "Bluesfest was a blast... It's a fantastic festival to be a part of," but for his experience of SXSW he said: "I love Austin, Texas - it's one of my favourite towns in the world... But at the risk of sounding like a total hipster, I prefer Austin when it's not SXSW because I love Texas and during SX it's full of people who aren't from Texas..."

Live Review: Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls + Lincoln Le Fevre - Barwon Club, Geelong (17.04.15)

There aren’t many acts that would take me to the lost world that is Geelong but when Frank Turner, who is beginning to become a bit of a Bluesfest staple, announced a massive wave of sideshows from the festival including the town’s Barwon Club, I knew I needed to be there. And so, I stand in front of the club/bar hybrid hours outside of the city, listening to the in-house speakers blaring The Smith Street Band. It’s a bit of a step down after his last tour two years ago with Boston’s Dropkick Murphys at Festival Hall but whether it be playing to 5000 or 50 people, Turner still treats it like the show of his life.

Album Review: Frank Turner - Last Minutes & Lost Evenings. (2012 LP & DVD)

frank turner

Some musicians are tiresome workers. They play every show they can, work hard at writing the best songs they can. They work at growing their fan base by interacting with them in person and through social media. They travel up and down the roads and across continents to play in every dirty bar and hall they can because they love what they do. Then after all the hard slogs, they break through. They break through to the recognition and the accolades that they deserve. And this has happened to punk folk troubadour Frank Turner.
