Frank Turner (Hampshire) talks about Positive Songs For Negative People and working with Butch Walker

the AU review’s Johnny Au had a sit down chat with English folk artist Frank Turner, looking ahead to the release of his sixth studio record, Positive Songs for Negative People (out in August). In the interview, Frank expresses his frustrations on his early visit to Australia, wanting to tour the country after the record had been released, “This Australian tour was supposed to be the first tour after the record was out. The record isn’t out yet so and that’s bad,” Turner says. “The good news is I’ll be back in Australia again before the end of the record cycle so that people can know the new songs.”

Turner then says that as a musician, recording the sixth album is something that doesn’t really classify as special. Although, in his best efforts, he tried to channel all his creative energies by making sure that the new material was as fresh as his debut record, “It’s the sixth album and I think both bands and audiences get a little bit tired by the sixth album for acts. It’s not an exciting number for an album,” He says, “I think it’s important for me to kind of sort of re-cast what I do slightly. I wanted to make a record that sounded like a debut album. When bands make a debut album, it’s kind of like pissing vinegar; you’re in the studio and then you knock out your live set. I think it’s exciting fresh and fizzy and I wanted that vibe for this record.”

After much convincing with record labels, he was lucky enough to work with producer and songwriter, Butch Walker and this gave him the opportunity to work with someone that understood his music and for that, he felt lucky and thankful that it happened, “Part of the delay of the record is that it took quite a long time to convince record label people that it was a good idea,” Turner continues. “In the end the project was kinda brought together in a really awesome way by Butch Walker who I didn’t know was a producer. I got in touch with him and it turns out he’s a fan of my stuff and we just kinda clicked in musical reference points and also he completely understood what it was I was trying to do in the record.”
