Fences, Hidden Figures and Stranger Things among the winners at the 23rd annual SAG Awards

The 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was a politically fueled event, as actors from across the turbulent USA took to the stage in between the celebrating, to express their lack of support for president Donald Trump.

Coming off of the heels of Meryl Streep’s emotional speech at the Golden Globes earlier this month, SAG winners Julia Louis-Dreyfus (who incidentally plays a fictional vice-president on Veep), Emma Stone and Bryan Cranston all threw in their two cents.

The highlight of the night was David Harbour’s intense speech after Stranger Things won for Best Ensemble in a Drama Series. The boisterous, wonderfully written rally cry not withstanding, it was almost overshadowed by Winona Ryder’s wide range of facial expressions which have sent the internet into an absolute frenzy.

Watch here:

Despite cleaning house at the Golden Globes, La La Land was surprisingly absent from the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category, though Emma Stone took home Best Actress. Hidden Figures , meanwhile, picked up the win for Best Cast, of which Moonlight had been the favourite. The true story of a trio of African American woman who were integral in a NASA space launch was an important win at an extremely rocky time in the States.

Denzel Washington picked up his first SAG for Fences, beating out Casey Affleck and Ryan Gosling. The actor was more surprised than anyone as he accepted his award for his portrayal of Troy Maxson, a 1950s’ sanitation worker who never came to terms with missing out on a baseball career. His co-star, Viola Davis also won for Best Supporting Actress.

Meanwhile, Lily Tomlin was given the Lifetime Achievement award by friend and 9 to 5 co-star Dolly Parton. She was recognised not only for her contribution to film & television (she currently stars in the SAG nominated Grace & Frankie), but for her humanitarian work.
