Live Review: Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell + Harmony James - The Star Event Centre, Sydney (27.06.15)

In Australia to perform material from their albums The Traveling Kind and Grammy award winning Old Yellow Moon for the first time, country/Americana/folk luminaries Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell put on a show rich with their utterly mesmerising sound. Considering that the pair first met and started working together back in 1974, it is easy to see how such a history could lead to their evocative and rich collaborations today – also making for a show that was at once relaxed and of the highest quality.

Sounds on Screen: Sydney Film Festival - Sing Me The Songs That Say I Love You - A Concert for Kate McGarrigle (CTC)

Rufus and Martha Wainwright

When Martha Wainwright performed in Sydney Opera House last year, she took a few moments to thank both the city and the venue for giving her such great family memories, as she reminisced about the wonderful week in 2005 when she, her brother, Rufus Wainwright, their mother Kate and aunt Anna McGarrigle, all holidayed together after appearing on the bill of Sydney Festival's ‘Came So Far For Beauty’ concerts.

Emmylou Harris - Hard Bargain (2011 LP)

Hard Bargain is the 22nd album by country-folk legend Emmylou Harris, and her 29th release, not counting compilations; her impressive catalogue showing very few, if any, missteps. Since 1969 she has progressed from being a bright eyed folk singer to touring as a part of Gram Parson’s band in the 70’s, receiving chart success in the 80’s and then being rediscovered by an alternative rock audience with 1995’s Daniel Lanois produced Wrecking Ball.

SXSW 2011: Part Four – Erland and Emmylou at the Convention Centre, Day Parties and Grouplove (17.03.11)

It was my second morning in Austin, and decided I best check out some of the free day music on display at the Convention Centre. First up, Erland and the Carnival, whose debut album I gave a glowing review to a year or so ago. They’ve since released a new album, Nightingale (their North American debut), and in this short half-hour-or-so set they jumped between the two.
