Album Review: Big Village - Big Things Volume Two (2012 Compilation LP)

A compilation album is often a big move for a record label and sadly the concept is usually carried out quite poorly in hip-hop. During the 90’s and early 2000’s, American Hip-Hop often saw an established label putting together a compilation – drawing upon all the strengths (and weaknesses) of each and every artist on their respective rosters to give the fans a bundle of new material. This used to be a very successful and anticipated event, from Ruff Ryders to Bad Boy, compilations not only promoted the artist, they helped the label to grow. It’s rare to see these compilations outside of America but Australian Hip-Hop label Big Village gave it a try with Big Things Volume Two, and the project could not have worked better.

Live Review: KRS-One + Def Wish Cast + Ellesquire - Enmore Theatre (05.04.12)

It would start with Boogie Down Productions (BDP) back in 1987 – the debut LP Criminal Minded was released and went on to become one of the most acclaimed albums in hip-hop. Long after Boogie Down Productions ceased to exist, KRS-One continues to have a massive impact on every aspect of hip-hop culture – it’s needless to say that the man is one of the most respected pioneers of the art.

The Herd + Sietta + Ellesquire - The Metro Theatre, Sydney (17.09.11)

On the back of their Future Shade Tour, I went to check out The Herd at the Metro Theatre, supported by Sietta and Ellesquire.

Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to see Ellesquire, but I did get to catch the end of Sietta's set; pulsating and heaving with dark, droning bass-lines, laced with an insanely powerful set of vocal chords, they blew me away.

Known for their boisterous live shows, The Herd flaunt their new songs on the Future Shade Tour this August, starting at Splendour In The Grass and ending mid-September in Canberra.

They will be supported by the electrifying soul duo Sietta – who are creating quite a buzz ahead of the release of their debut album, The Seventh Passenger.
