Festival Review: Lollapalooza Berlin - Tempelhof Airport, Germany (12.09.15 & 13.09.15)

Photo: Stephan Flad.

Lollapalooza branched out into Europe for the first time over the weekend, taking Berlin's Tempelhof Airport by storm. The sold out event drew huge numbers of music fans down to the defunct airport (one of the coolest festival venues I've been too, I'll add) for some brilliant sets by artists who've been away for a little while, some of the biggest names touring at the moment and some recent festival favourites. Having attended Lollapalooza in Chicago last year, I felt like I was going into this one at least a little prepared, but Berlin's festival game was another beast in itself.

Album Review: Ocean Carolina - Maudlin Days (2015 LP)

It's easy to assume that all bands start off with an influence of some sort. Whether it's from the music they grew up listening to or the people that have influenced them to start their own band, there is no conventional way of making music; you simply do it because you love it. Carrying over his expertise, frontman of Ocean Carolina, Michael Simone has had a myriad of opportunities to showcase his talents before the band's inception. Together with Simone's work in the EDM industry, what his band has produced is an album that offers an Americana feel - something that warms the heart with its honest way of making you feel like you can breathe the fresh air of the countryside. With Maudlin Days, they take you on a journey of something unique that thrives on its gentle simplicity.

Live Review: Everything Everything + Urban Cone - Metro Theatre, Sydney (23.07.15)

Coming all the way from Stockholm, Sweden, openers Urban Cone brought a delightful set that came by surprise. With influences coming from both Two Door Cinema Club and Satellite Stories, the band brought out an infectious set list that was all-too-short-lived.

Album Review: Dawes - All Your Favorite Bands (2015 LP)

Winter time is the season where you’re prone to feeling down and uninspired. There’s only so much gloomy weather you can handle and this affects the way you work and your mood. It becomes a groveling chore to even get out of bed because of the unforgiving cold that is felt through your skin. Suffice it to say, Dawes’ latest offering, All Your Favorite Bands brings warmth and encouraging light to your gloomy days of the winter season.

And in the blink of an eye, Austin City Limits came to an end for yours truly for another year. But not before one more day of some incredible music, with Atoms for Peace (pictured) and Lionel Richie closing out the festival.

Live Review: Byron Bay Bluesfest Day Five ft. Zappa Plays Zappa + Dawes and more – Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm (09.04.12)

The gumboots have stayed in backs of cars across Tyagarah. This has definitely been a Bluesfest to remember!

Although over the past four days we’ve talked a lot about the crowd getting moving to the incredible Bluesfest artists’ beats, Day 5 felt a lot more introspective. As storytellers and image-weavers dominated our discoveries, there was a line drawn in bold between us and the musical past.
