Album Review: Bluejuice - Retrospectable (2014 LP)

It was a sad day for the Australian music community on August 4th last year, when Sydney act Bluejuice decided to call it a day and cease doing what they did best: be a band. On the back of the announcement, the four piece rolled out on an extensive nationwide farewell tour and released what is simply and quite literally their best work, in Retrospectable.

The New Year's break saw the time of one of our best loved bands, Bluejuice, come to an end. Calling time on their 13 year career with a run of festival sets at Falls and Southbound at the end of 2014, the crowds bore witness to a lot of fun, nudity and incredible entertainment from the Sydney band who took to Tassie, Victoria, Byron Bay and WA for the last time. In one of their final interviews, Jake and Stav sat down for a drink and chat with the AU about their 'Retrospectable Tour', what they want to be remembered for, and tips for sexual pleasure.

Bundling ourselves up and hitting the road on a sunny Sunday afternoon, myself and fellow AU writer and music nut Bridget Hustwaite rolled on down the coast to Lorne for the 2014 Falls Festival. Hungover and still waking up, we drove back to Melbourne early New Year's Day morning, already discussing the hits and misses of the festival. Below are just a couple of thoughts on some of the stand out bands on the line up this year.

As the sun rose on a perfect final day of the Falls Festival, weary punters headed to the valley in anticipation of another great day of music. Alt-J, The Presets and Safia were just a few of the standouts on the day. Our photographer John Goodridge brings you these photos from the final day.

Festival Review: Falls Festival Day Four ft. Vance Joy + Bluejuice + The Presets - Lorne, Victoria (31.12.14)

It was as if the gods suddenly looked down on the Lorne site of the 2014 Falls Festival and told each other, 'You know what? They've suffered enough with the rain.' - the clouds disappeared for our New Year's Eve in the forest and the temperature rose considerably, a perfect atmosphere for our final day at the festival. Moods were high (weed was probably helping in that regard, too) and the music was totally fitting as one's soundtrack to the end of the year.

The Falls Festival countdown is on...who should you be catching this New Year's?

Falls Festival 2013, by John Goodridge.

It's that time of year again, friends. Convoys are being planned, alcohol tolerances are being tested on Christmas Day in preparation and road trip playlists are being pulled together. The Falls Festival is kicking off this weekend, the ultimate New Year's get away for many Australian music fans keen for an escape with mates (plus a good few new ones by the end of it all) and some brilliant live music to round out their year. This year's line up hasn't been without its disappointments, with Robyn and Röyksopp and more recently, Julian Casablancas + The Voidz, having to drop out, but as usual, the crew behind one of the most popular festivals on our calendar have stepped up to the challenge, adding some great new bands and ensuring that the attendees will have all their party needs taken care of, right through into the early hours of New Year's Day.

the AU interview: We chat to Jake Stone (Sydney) on the ARIA Red Carpet about 2014 and the end of Bluejuice.

As we come to the end of 2014, we've been talking to a lot of our favourite local and international artists about their year in music. Few have had bigger years than Bluejuice's Jake Stone, who has spent the last few months playing shows to bring his time in Bluejuice to an end (though Falls Festival is yet to come!). We spoke to Jake about it all on the ARIA red carpet...

Album Review: Bluejuice - Retrospectable (2014 Compilation)

I was in America when I found out Bluejuice were calling time on their 13 year long career. My Facebook feed was full of 'What the fuck?' statuses, but at the same time, I think there was a bit of sad acceptance there. You could tell it was coming. Along with the massive tour that has taken Jake, Stav, Jamie and crew around the country over that past few months, fans have been gifted one last record, a little 'thanks for the good times' parting album in the 'Greatest Hits' compilation, Retrospectable. Featuring cuts from their three studio albums, as well as some new tracks, it's the perfect playlist for the Bluejuice fan who isn't quite ready to let go yet, and for those of us who can now look back fondly on the past few years of creative chaos and fun that have been associated with this bunch.

Live Review: Bluejuice + Deep Sea Arcade - The Metro Theatre, Sydney (24.10.14)

They are one of Australia’s most loved and lauded live acts and sadly, they are calling it quits. Those crazy cats from Bluejuice have decided it’s time to hang up the ridiculous home-made costumes and move on to new projects and lives. In the span of 13 years of touring, if you hadn’t seen them play at least once, be it at one of their own insanely wild headline shows or on a huge summer festival bill, you truly did miss out on seeing something spectacular.

Live Review: Bluejuice + Tyler Touché + Jody - The Hi-Fi, Brisbane (02.10.14)

When I first heard the news that Bluejuice, one of the craziest and most talented bands out there, were breaking up, there were some tears. I’m not just talking the “I’ve got something in my eye” tears, I’m talking about the streaming kind. For the past 13 years, Bluejuice have been knocking socks (and jocks) right off, and it is monumentally sad that they are calling it quits. In saying that, they are putting on a Last Hurrah tour all around the country so as to have a “Happy Funeral”, Jake put it.

Bluejuice (supported by the grungy mope rockers Jody and the ever-smooth Tyler Touché) tore up the HiFi with a high energy show as part of their final tour. Rhys Herriott was there to capture the action.

Live Review: Bluejuice + The Love Junkies - Capitol, Perth (26.09.14)

If you are a diagnosed sufferer of FOMO, please exit your web browser now. Pop rock favourites Bluejuice honoured Perth last night on their Retrospectable tour giving the country one last farewell before the disbandment becomes official. Capitol welcomed a very broad spectrum of BJ fans, from the young and old to those who were just there to grope frontman Jake Stone one last time.
