Only For The Woods is the first of an ambitious two EP creation from Sydney’s Black Lakes, with the second due for release next year. Only For The Woods makes for an interesting listen, nothing like I imagined it would be.

A week into my Hello Sunday Morning pledge and the ultimate, looming question of whether Sydney’s music scene can be enjoyed without the catalyst of a few too many beers was about to be answered. The guinea pig in question was local band Black Lakes, known in a past life as Radio National.

Black Lakes have scored a residency at the Hollywood Hotel, which will see the band performing sets every Wednesday through September. The band will be promoting their new EP, Only for the Woods, the first of their collection of Trick Hotel EPs. The residency is free to attend and the audience will be able to catch some other great Sydney bands at each show!

The Landsdowne and I have a love/hate relationship. On the one hand, it’s perfectly grungy, has a sweet roof top area, and you don’t need oversized glasses to fit in with the crowd. On the other hand, it’s a common occurrence to be caught out with no toilet paper, and an order of ‘tequila-soda-fresh-lime’ is usually met with dubious looks. One thing’s for sure though, when it comes to music, they know their shit.
