Live Review: Big K.R.I.T + Milwaukee Banks + Preacha - Oxford Art Factory (27.09.15)

"A lot of people, when they come to my shows they get a good understanding of how much I believe in my own music...", Big K.R.I.T told me on the phone a few days prior to starting his debut Australian tour. The Mississippi emcee was to headline Outside In festival and also play a few solo shows around the country, and while he let me know what to expect, I still wasn't prepared for just how much energy and passion he brought to the stage. While I unfortunately missed him at Outside In, I made sure to catch him at Oxford Art Factory the following day, where he was given some great support from Aussie duo Milwaukee Banks and local DJ Preacha.

the AU interview: Big K.R.I.T (Mississippi) on Australian tour, B.B King, southern hip hop, and more

If Kendrick Lamar is running things on the west, and J Cole is defining the east for a new generation, then the third coast is most definitely held down by Big K.R.I.T. The Meridian, Mississippi emcee took a bit longer than the aforementioned to really make a dent in the mainstream hip hop scene, but once he did he had more than just the utmost respect from his peers, he quickly received the adoration of millions of discerning hip hop fans around the world based off of his strong, thoughtful lyricism and varied style which saw him creating trunk-rattling dirty south hits right alongside poetic tracks like "The Vent" and "Red Eye" across numerous acclaimed mixtapes and two very strong studio albums.

CLOSED Win a double pass to see Big K.R.I.T live in your city

I could personally talk non-stop about how exciting Big K.R.I.T is to the world of hip hop. Having been around for years but only really making a commercial impact within the past few, the Mississippi emcee is a ferocious, highly innovative and thought provoking emcee that deserves to be mentioned right alongside the likes of Kendrick Lamar and J Cole as the true leaders of the new-gen. For years, hip hop fans in Australia have been aching for a tour from this versatile rapper-producer, and the team behind Outside In have been listening. K.R.I.T will be heading out here for Sydney's Outside In, basing a four-show headline tour around that and we've got a DOUBLE PASS to give away for each show.

the AU playlist: 10 songs we cannot wait to hear at OutsideIn 2015

For fans of hip hop and soul, today's first line up announcement for OutsideIn has been some big news. First, we've got neo-soul luminary Bilal heading down with his 8-piece band in tow, and then we've got two southern rap heavyweights from two very different eras, both obsessed with Cadillacs: Devin the Dude from the 90's, and Big K.R.I.T from the now. In addition to this, we've got nice list of acts that span various styles in electronica, techno, and house, most of which have a very loyal fanbase to place Sydney's most innovative boutique festival once again at the front of the pack of music events happening later this year. While half the line-up is still yet to be announced (20 acts coming, to be exact), we thought we'd look at the current list of names and bring you 10 songs we cannot wait to hear live at Manning House on Satuday 26th September.
