Festival Review: St Jerome's Laneway Festival - Hart's Mill, Port Adelaide (06.02.15)

It turned out to be another hot day out by the river in Adelaide for the Laneway Festival but thankfully, the site down at Hart's Mill had been fitted out to deal with the conditions...just. With a line up boasting some of the best names in music in the moment, I was so excited to get down there and check the festival out; I hadn't been as excited for a festival as I was for this one in quite a while.

Live Review: Benjamin Booker + Spookyland - Newtown Social Club, Sydney (02.02.15)

It's been exciting to see Spookyland re-emerge in recent months, off the back of the band's latest EP Rock and Roll Weakling. It feels appropriate to consider the EP something of a new start for a project that didn't quite take off back in 2010, when it was essentially the solo effort of Marcus Gordon. Though his debut EP showed tremendous promise, it feels that with a three piece band behind him, strong management and some finely tuned material, all that promise is being realised.

Single Stream: Benjamin Booker "Have You Seen My Son?" (2014)

"Have You Seen My Son?" is the second single from New Orleans native Benjamin Booker's debut album, which is due for release on August 15th. An electrifying mix of garage-rock, punk and soul flavours from the Deep South, this song marks Booker as one to watch.

New Music Video: Benjamin Booker "Violent Shiver" (2014)

You've got to be doing something right for Jack White to take you around America as his opening act, so garage-rawk New Orleans songwriter Benjamin Booker looks set for big things. Though there isn't a date yet for his debut record, his first single "Violent Shiver" erupts out of the gates like a horse on Melbourne Cup day and doesn't let up for three minutes, with Booker's whiskey-and-sandpaper drawl leading the charge. Even if you can't make out the words, this is quit-your-job-and-hit-the-freeway stuff, and it's endlessly replayable.
