Young Revelry - You & I (2010 EP)

young_revelry

I almost feel remiss at calling this an EP, with seven full-length quality tracks You & I could easily have been released as an album. But then EPs are the "in thing" these days, perhaps more so than the single. But I digress, You & I is the debut release by Perth band Young Revelry. They are a relatively new band, but one who are already beginning to make waves both locally and nationally, with support slots for Shihad, Children Collide and The Handsome Furs. So the next logical step obviously was to record, get something out there. Along with producer Woody Annison (Children Collide) the band decamped to rural WA to start recording the tracks for this EP.

I must say I do like the results of the recording session. The band have a sound that is perhaps more reminiscent of the '90s and early '00s than of right now. The record is chock full of loud guitars, fuzzy distortion and great pulsating bass undercurrents. Not to mention some great vocal work from Astone, these are strong weighty vocals finely suited to the brand of rock music the band play. But even then he has a versatility to his voice, he is able to mix it up a little to really give a particular track a greater edge.

Highlights for me are opening track "You & I", which really sets the sonic landscape, so to speak. It introduces some of the key features of the band right from the outset: the jangly guitars and the solid vocals, not to mention some great lyrics. Another highlight would be "Came Back Today" - that opening riff gets me every time, and the energy and rawness is palpable and leads into what is a great song, with some solid "shouty" vocals and distorted guitars.

For a first release this is incredibly promising. Its a record full of great songs which work well as a platform for bigger and better things in the future. It's an aggressive push forward, and hopefully one which will find the band new followers around Australia. They will be touring all through September, so don't miss out!
