Underlights - Love Me (2010 Single)

underlights

There’s something pleasingly raw about all-male four-piece folk rock band Underlights in their track "Love me". They’ve managed to engage the honesty of Aussie pub rock with the quality and edge of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the sensuality of Oasis.

Jack Friel’s raspy vocals expel heart-drawn lyrics of a suffered and consequently controlled love over the strings of a gritty acoustic electric guitar and a pacing rock beat. You’ll feel like you’re in a Mustang, cruising down a desert road somewhere in the barren outskirts of Nevada with the sun belting down against your aviators.

Real or imagined, I have convinced myself that the sincere but explosive pipes of a harmonica feature in the last third of the song - not a talent usually exercised by 20-something year old Sydneysiders. This quirk only adds to the track’s likability.

Melt Bar, Kit & Kaboodle, and Annandale Hotel regulars, Underlights clearly have a gift for blues-infused rock. In the short time they’ve been around, it’s clear they have the talent to make it big. Mark my words: these Underlights will become highlights in no time.
