Same songs, different breakdown. The Vines’ newest long player, Future Primitive, presents nothing more than a rehashing of all the material they’ve ever produced, only with the addition of some out-dated synthesized sounds, and Chris Colonna in the producer’s chair to try and give it that ‘futuristic’ appeal they were suggesting with the title. Good news if you’re already a patriotic fan of the band, because they’re not a bad set of tunes; just nothing you haven’t heard before.
Opening the album is "Get Free"... "Highly Evolved"? "Ride"? It’s called "Gimme Love", but it doesn’t really matter. You could call it any of the aforementioned song titles, and it’d all be the same song; a catchy rock-pop song to scream along to, as Nicholls slurs his words.
"A.S 4" is actually a song you may have heard before; the gentle, acoustic ballad having been in different incarnations on past albums. This rendering finds some mellow jungle-esque noises seeing the song out. I feel as though I finally find a moment of interest - it’s then ruined by the trashing racket of "Wild Animals", a vapid song of no importance.
The Vines have created another album of insignificance. What will come next is a billing on the Big Day Out that will be called off halfway through. Nicholls will go into hiding. People will begin to wet their pants when they hear whispers of some new songs. They’ll release an album, and the cycle will continue. Wash, rinse, repeat.
