Album Review: The Vasco Era - The Vasco Era (2011 LP)

The Vasco Era

After two previous LPs in 2007 and 2009, The Vasco Era have a released their first self titled album. The band are known for their full rock and roll sound, with screaming vocals and heavy guitars. It’s not music for everyone, but will please fans of Rage Against The Machine, Children Collide, The Mars Volta and similar.

The Vasco Era is full on, so to speak, from start to finish. The album begins with no introduction on the track “A Conversation At Revolver”. The lack of introductions is a staple of The Vasco Era’s sound, which launches into tracks at full speed, rather than building up to the chorus. The band’s albums almost sound like a mixture of demos, as there is a lack of structure and refinement. This is a testament to the band’s unique recording style, which has not changed throughout their career.

Vocalist Sid O’Neil’s screaming/singing/speaking style works really well on tracks such as “Rock and Roll Is The Only Thing That Makes Me Feel Good”, but has a tendency to sound whiny, and after several tracks, can be very overbearing. For this reason, those less familiar with the genre will appreciate The Vasco Era in small doses, as opposed to back to back tracks.

Although not the album for me, The Vasco Era are unforgettable in a live setting. Their recordings do not do them justice, as their energy and musical talent is undeniable when witnessed in person.
