The Solomons - The Solomons (2010 EP)

Melbourne quartet The Solomons have finally released their rock and roll infused self titled EP. Opening track, and debut single (which I wrote about a short while back) is ‘Waiting for something to Happen’. The male lead vocals have a nonchalant, nasally timbre, sung over a metallic country rock swagger. The jangly up and down rhythm matched with the catchy chorus line of “But I’m so tired...of waiting for something to happen...” makes for the perfect, infectious single.

Track number two, ‘Evening’s Empire’ is along the same vein, with fast paced rock and roll appeal. But with the female vocals taking the lead, it leaves the song falling a little flat, and even slightly corny; the song not doing anything dramatic either way by being part of the release.

My favourite number is ‘Ways of Escape’, bringing back the male lead vocals; it tones down the rustic enthusiasm and pulls out some gentle guitar melodies and slight, atmospheric strings. Echoing Oasis through and through, the track subtly floats into ‘Rise and Fall’, the opening riff (hopefully) giving some sort of nod to the Church. The easy listening track doesn’t have any lyrics you can sing along to, but it definitely has a longevity to it.

Still maintaining the chiller appeal of the two tracks before, ‘Old Songs’ does have hail the return of that swinging country vibe present early on, the rattly guitar winding its way along the song.

The EP opens with a strong calling-card and despite losing some faith a couple songs in, the later three tracks bring it all back and show the great song-writing skills the band have. It’s not an extremely strong debut, but obviously something band and listener alike can have a lot of fun with.
