The second EP from this Cairns based indie outfit is a perfect slice of emotional storytelling mixed with ethereal sounds. The result is a record that improves upon every listen. There is always another inflection or key change for the listener to notice and enjoy. This is very much the beauty of The Medics; they do not want to cram their music down anyone’s throat but rather slowly let the listener discover the beauty of the songs, and appreciate what is going on.
The first song intoxicates your ears, and brings you into the world of The Medics. Her Song is the perfect blend of catchy beats with delicate melodies which first introduces the recurrent them of boats and sailing away in its story of a “girl who sailed away and never came back.” It then segues beautifully into Amongst the Cornfield; a sorrowful ballad which continues to hold the listeners attention. The second song is also where it becomes more emotional, the ups and downs of the story being mirrored in the music, this works to prepares you for perhaps the most emotional track on the EP, Joseph.
Joseph contains beautiful, emotionally raw vocals, as well as some of the fiercest tambourine playing you’ve ever heard. These combine with pounding beats and rhythms which draw you into the pain and anguish of the singer. It functions perfectly as the middle track for this EP, creating a crescendo of everything The Medics strive for, this is music which creates one hell of an impression.
The beat of Sinking Ship is catchy as hell, and further intoxicates you. This track blends the beautiful soothing lullaby quality of earlier tracks, with the heavy beats and emotional vocals of Joseph effortlessly. The EP closes with Wolves, and from the moment it begins you can already sense that it is the perfect conclusion. Again, it’s catchy as hell and instantly draws you in, this time with an added xylophone.
The Medics are a perfect indie group. Their sound could be described as somewhere between Kisschasy and Band of Horses, but they have a deeper, more emotional element which is apparent even in the instrumentals. They can be both quiet and ambient or loud and emotional, whatever they are being though, it is something special and something they are able to make their own. In short, this EP is an absolute stunner.
