The Levitators - Eclectica (2011 EP)

I don’t think there’s ever been a release with a title more apt than The Levitators’ latest EP Eclectica.

Formed in 2004 and hailing from Adelaide, The Levitators' are a five-piece band. It’s difficult to pin down a their genre though. They play everything from funk, soul and jazz through to reggae, dub and electro.

It’s this vast assortment of influences and musical styles that helps to create the blend of instruments and genres on Eclectica. The Levitators' are able to take all of these influences and meld them into their own, coherent sound – and the results are certainly impressive.

There are just six tracks on the EP, but each has it’s own distinct sound.

EP opener "Once Again" has a clear roots influence and world music sound. "Sunshine In My Juice" is perhaps the most upbeat track on the EP. With a foundation in keys and sax, this is definitely a track to dance to and it’s songs like this that give a feel for what the band would be like live. "Microphone Freak" then marks a dramatic change in style. This track has a much darker sound and with the heavy use of synths, displays The Levitators' marked electro influence.

The following track, "Everything I Do" is different yet again. This song centres on a distinct funk and soul bass line, melody and beat. "Devils Dance" deviates again, incorporating a long instrumental interlude that compliments the catchy tune. Finally, "One Way Ticket" introduces yet another style to The Levitators’ vast arsenal of genres. With a clear dub sound, this track also draws on the band’s electro influences.

Listening to the EP for the first time, you quickly realise you don’t have a clue what the next track will sound like. There are such distinct differences in each song as The Levitators showcase their versatility and skill, successfully tackling each genre, blending them into well-rounded songs.

Despite the differences on each track there is one common thread that weaves clearly through Eclectica – the songs are all relaxed with a chilled vibe, making them perfect for summer.
