The Killgirls - Animal (2011 EP)

Animal is the second EP from Adelaide electro-rockers The Killgirls. This is a high-powered, energetic release, which dabbles in dance, indie and rock - guaranteed to make you move! It’s irresistible.

Opener, "Flint and the Steel", sets the scene, a (welcome) assault on the ears. "Grams and Tons" is tied with "Disconnected" for my favourite track, and "Astronaut" is a dirty synth/funk jam that cannot be ignored.

"What I Need" is an interesting track; tantalising, memorable vocals, complemented by a killer guitar line, and even drops in a dubstep-esque breakdown, which works to their advantage. The Killgirls use it in a minimal sense, and actually pull it off better than the millions of other artists currently replicating the dubstep breakdown.

The riffs on this EP are relentlessly catchy, and singer Mario Spate’s voice is packed with attitude and conviction.

I’m yet to have the chance to listen to The Killgirls' previous releases, but if Animal is any indication of their quality, I’ll definitely be checking out their older material.

Highly recommended for fans of Daft Punk, Nine Inch Nails and The Presets.

An explosive mixture of dance, punk and rock that hits all the right notes. An outstanding release. Be sure to keep an eye on The Killgirls!
