The Frowning Clouds - All Night Long (2011 Single)

“All Night Long” by The Frowning Clouds has the uncanny ability to be played over and over again without getting old or tired. Perhaps it’s the jangly guitars, the '60s energy in the vocals, or the lo-fi, cut-directly-to-tape sound. In any case the latest single from the Geelong quintet is three minutes of catchy, irrepressible, nostalgic and fun garage pop based entirely in the 1960s.

The lyrics could be analysed, deconstructed and defined – but it would not likely lead anywhere. This is '60s Garage at its best, and the words play little to no role in what the song is.

The jaunty guitar chords, chunky bass riffs, and cheeky tambourines make this a visceral experience. One doesn’t listen to “All Night Long” with the head, one listens to it with the heart.

Listening to The Frowning Clouds strut their musical talents, attempting to bring back four-track tape and the bowl cut, turtleneck combo, it becomes clear how one can become so entranced with the rock, garage and pop of the 1960s.

“All Night Long” is a fantastic spring track, opening with a clear riff sustained through the entire radio-friendly song; you can imagine the band standing up there, swinging like the Beatles. The Frowning Clouds have matured since “Listen Closlier”, and it’s for the best.
