The Fearless Vampire Killers have released their latest single “Tell Me What You’re Trying To Say” and come close to perfecting their circa 1970s rock and roll sound. The track continues on the same path as the band’s previous material, but with a few surprising additions.
Similarly to The Beatles’ track “Yer Blues”, (that The Fearless Vampire Killers frequently cover at live shows), “Tell Me What You’re Trying To Say” successfully experiments with changes in tempo to create a catchy song without sticking to a ‘tried and true’ formula. The chorus is layered with swampy guitars and a continuous rock and roll riff. The verses continue the same riff but at a slower pace and greater emphasis on lead singer Seán Ainsworth’s voice. The band never fails to create memorable guitar riffs, and this single is certainly no exception. The repetitive lyrics are almost irrelevant as The Fearless Vampire Killers’ sound exudes from guitarists Ainsworth, Jacob McGuffie and Al Marx, with the lyrical content going almost unnoticed.
The role of drummer Justin Olsson is less prominent on this track compared to prior material, but provides the back bone for the heavily guitar centric song. The accompanying video is yet to be released, although behind the scenes photos suggest the State Library of Victoria and aspiring ballerinas are involved.
After a series of successful EPs and singles that have harnessed a cult following, The Fearless Vampire Killers upcoming debut LP is definitely one to look out for.
