The Besnard Lakes - ... are the Roaring Night (2010 LP)

My Bloody Valentine’s influence has been seeping through rock and roll apparently for some time now, inching its way into everything from major alternative releases to smaller, more dedicated shoegaze fare. The Besnard Lake’s newest offering, Are the Roaring Night, revels in the seminal 90s band's luminous and densely-effected sound, while drawing influence from other elements of psychedelic shoegaze rock and roll.

The result? It’s quite beautiful, really.

They reach that peak-era Beach Boys had on rock and roll which has yet to fade, and is unlikely to ever get tired. Those sweet and melancholy harmonies, on show deliciously throughout Are the Roaring Night, are pure magic, regardless of the context. Here they’re juxtaposed against a moody and foggy musical backdrop, creating an intriguing aural atmosphere. Are the Roaring Night is thick with mood and ambience. While it’s not groundbreaking, the album uses its influences well, combining these Beach Boys and MBV elements with licks that sound inspired by the jangling energy of The Stone Roses (see the track "Glass Printer"), and the mesmerising emotion of "Slowdive".

For those listeners looking for detail, there’s a lot to find in Are the Roaring Night. Its ten tracks fold together effortlessly though; this is an easy and enjoyable one-sit listen. And those harmonies… those harmonies. Pure intoxication.
