The Bedroom Philosopher - "Leaving My Hairdresser" (2011 Single)

Awkwardstra bassist Andy Hazel introduces The Bedroom Philosopher (Justin Heazlewood) as “the whitest man alive” on this new track from BP and his band, the Awkwardstra, lifted from his latest Comedy Festival show Wit-Bix and, bless him, if he isn’t just.

This deeply white Motown-esque number covers the middle-class hardship of finding a new hairdresser when your current cutter stops caring.
Borrowing, as Heazlewood himself mentions, a dash from Beck’s "Debra" (sans the hideous Beck falsetto attempt), "...Hairdresser" is endearing and amusing without falling into that ‘novelty song’ pit. One thing Heazlewood and band are bang on good at is creating decent songs while keeping them wry and clever.

Through some marching band horns and subtextual lyricism (“It’s the morning after our first affair/ I can see he’s cut that man, cut that man right out of my hair”), Heazlewood both unites and alienates: male listeners may not understand the concept of paying fifty dollars or more for a haircut, as one Adelaide journalist pointed out (“No man in Adelaide would pay more than $15 for a haircut”) but Melbourne quasi-hipsters will happily fork out a fiddy and beyond for a trim. Different strokes…

The song ends with some band call and response sing-along and happy clapping; Heazlewood has proven his worth as a comedian for some years but after the whirling success of 2010’s Com Fest show and album Songs from the 86 Tram and this year’s Wit-Bix, Heazlewood and Co. are happily dominating the musical-comedy market…without resorting to Eminem parodies.
