Sound of Seasons – Sweet Decline (2011 Single)

With a supporting tour already underway, it seems that the gods have smiled on the Sound of Seasons. But what about their second single? Will it stand up on its own? Dave Roberts investigates.

I’ve been keeping an eye on these guys for a little while now – and I must say I’m impressed. Their first single, All over Me was impressive and got this metalhead interested in the overall tones of the band. And now, comes their second single, Sweet Decline. Now, I’ll split this up into two parts, first the music and then the video.

The music is everything you’d expect from these guys. Punchy, dark and poppy but not sickening so in any aspect. It’s tasteful, fun, and performed well. Yes, you can hear a good performance, for those skeptics out there. The Christmas/fairy tale like xylophone opening gives way to a huge guitar and full band sound that explodes out the speakers, thanks to a fantastic master and mix. The only criticism I have is that some of the lyrics are a little hard to make out. I don’t that’s a fault of the mix, it’s a little bit of a characteristic of the singer’s voice – it’s not a bad thing, it just takes me a few extra listens to hear the words being said.

Now, onto the video clip. When I first watched it, honestly, I thought ‘Wow. Those stair ballisters are the same as the ones at home.’ Then I thought ‘Cool video clip.’ And that’s about as far as it goes. I wouldn’t say its an amazing clip, nor is it bad. It’s above average, sure, especially for a band of this age. But it’s kind of disjointed – it seems like they are trying to push a narrative but I’m not too sure what that narrative is… something about upper class blindness perhaps? But, it’s shot well, the performance sections look fantastic and the acting sections look lovely and lush.

The single is, overall, a great single for the band. I really enjoyed listening to it, The only thing I’m worried about it the guys performing it live. There are a lot of notes in the vocals that are going to be hard to hit live, methinks, but like the good journalist I am I’ll give the guys the benefit of the doubt and wait until I see them live before i pass judgement.

I think these guys are a band to watch, and if you’re a fan of pop-rock or even any form of rock you’ll probably love it. Don’t be surprised if you see them in the top 40 sometime soon, and if this is a taste of things to come, we are certainly in for one hell of a meal.

OVERALL SCORE: 8/10
