We The Kings - Smile Kid (2010 LP)

We The Kings

Catchy Fueled By Ramen signed band We The Kings are back to their pop punk best with latest LP Smile Kid.

While more pop than punk, the American quartet have once again delivered catchy and uplifting tunes, the perfect soundtrack to any teenager's life.

While criticisms have been made that the band didn’t do something more versatile with this release or made a higher progression, it is to be pointed out that We The Kings aren’t out to create something original or win a Grammy and this isn’t technically a bad thing. They know what they are good at, and what will keep their fan-base happy, and this is what they have achieved with Smile Kid.

The band follow the successful formula to making a summer soundtrack almost perfectly – with songs about girls, growing up, summer and falling in love.

Opening track "She Takes Me High" is the perfect opener and shows what we can expect from the rest of the EP. While the lyrics aren’t overly original, the band has been successful in creating another catchy hit. Try not singing along to the "Do, do, do, do, do, do, do..."s by the end of the song.

"Summer Love", "The Story of Your Life" and "Promise The Stars" will take you to summer and make you want to be lying on the beach, chilling with friends, and dancing the night away.

One track that that does shake it up a bit, whether it be in a good or bad way (you can be the judge of that) is song "We’ll Be a Dream" featuring Disney pop star Demi Lovato. While Demi adds more sugar than spice, I’m a secret fan of her voice and she is generally the only Disney star I have some sort of respect for so I didn’t mind the song, though for some reason I can imagine it being in a kids movie - it has that type of fairytale quality. However Travis Clark and Demi’s vocals blend in and harmonise well together.

Added bonus tracks the ever catchy "Check Yes Juliet" and "Secret Valentine" demonstrate that We The Kings haven’t strayed that far from their first release, but shows they have found their niche and delivered to their target audience.

If you’re looking for a sugary pop-punk anthem for your summer, Smile Kid is it. And with summer approaching there’s no better time to start listening. The band have been successful with the title name also – try not smiling along to some of these tunes. However just like everything else sweet and sugary, the EP is best taken in small doses.
