Arctic Monkeys - Don't Sit Down Cause I've Moved Your Chair (2011 Single)

It was not too long ago that Arctic Monkeys were the quintessential indie band and the very mention of them would get hipsters all gooey. Somewhere between the release of their second and third album the hype surrounding them quietened and even though Humbug was well-received the name Arctic Monkeys was lost amongst a bunch of new ‘it’ bands.

Enter “Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair” to serve as the first offering from their upcoming fourth album Suck It and See. The first thing you notice is that the sound is a lot darker than popular tunes like “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” and “Mardy Bum” - it sounds a lot more mature than their past singles – more in the vein of vintage rock than 21st century indie.

The brilliant, punch-packing song-writing is as present as ever in Alex Turner’s vocals as he tells us to “bite the lightning and tell me how it tastes,” with a blunt delivery while the almost-wordless chorus proves simple-yet-effective, especially towards the end as it lets the screaming riffs speak for themselves.

If this is any indication for the quality of Suck it and See then you can be sure Arctic Monkeys will be giving us yet another standout album which will knock out any competition they may have to being the top UK rock band today.
