PVT - Church With No Magic (2010 LP)

album_review_PVT

We, at the[AU]review, welcome back with open arms Australia's very own post-rock answer to the Explosions In The Sky's and Godspeed You! Black Emperor's of the world.

PVT has undergone a forced metamorphosis from their former incarnation of Pivot (goddamn lawsuit-happy yanks). First coming to my attention with their arresting international debut O Soundtrack My Heart, this three-piece of ethereal rock magic began life as a free-form jam session between a bunch of five mates in Sydney.

Suffering more identity crisis than Harvey Dent, PVT has emerged from the other side just as anthemic as ever, with their latest album Church With No Magic. Setting the scene from the opening minutes with the ominous and foreboding "Community", PVT prepares you for a ride into the swelling and often menacing world they have created on this album.

The judicious and welcome use of vocals throughout Church With No Magic does much to control and direct your attention, lending both weight and a sense of importance to the slow-burn utilised to build each song, and the album, as a whole. The standout moment is a mid-album hat-trick of post-rock perfection: the synth-driven title track, followed by personal favourite "Crimson Swan", and rounded out by lead single, and the most accessible track, "Window".

Halfway through "Crimson Swan", I felt like I was drowning in the middle of a The Knife album at its most nihilistic (and best). Within the next few minutes, I was stunned to find myself singing along to the inspirational refrain of 'I won’t slip, I won’t fall, I won’t change' on "Window". It gives a sense of the fascinating mosaic into which PVT have now evolved.

Whilst no song may make any Triple J Hottest 100 list (on second thoughts, "Window" is pretty radio-friendly...), PVT may just make a more prestigious list: the[AU]review's Best Album of 2010.

PVT: Get Sued. Change Name. Live Forever.

Review Score: 7.5 / 10
