After
the[AU]review got a sneak peak at this compilation album from Sydney
indie club heroes 'Purple Sneakers DJs' back in April, we were
salivating in anticipation of hearing the full mix. Casting our minds
back, the mix was 10 minutes of pure indie dance heaven. Mashing
together indie rock, dance, pop, and electro I thought the boys were on
the verge of doing the impossible and overshadowing party legend 'Girl
Talk' on the full release. Somewhat disappointingly, the end product
hasn't eventuated as I envisaged.

Rather than being a longform mix with sample after sample jammed/mashed/mixed/bastardised
together to create entirely new tracks, the full album is just a well
blended compilation of songs. PS DJs have delivered two discs with
divergent themes, the first focused on 'Booty Shakin' songs and the
second on 'Chin Strokin' songs. To put it simply DISC 1=DANCE; DISC
2=RELAX.

I find it hard to get too disappointed by the end
product though because it features so many fan-fucking-tastic songs I
already knew and loved ('Cousins', 'Lisztomania', 'Community Service
Announcement', 'What Would I Want? Sky!'...I can go on). As well as a
couple of cheeky discoveries that I'm really greatful to have found
(hello 'Two Door Cinema Club' - 'I Can Talk', 'Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire!'
– 'War Coward'). On the flipside, low points included the grotesquely
overplayed 'Bulletproof' and 'Pon De Floor'.

PS DJs have struck
a great balance between established artists / newcomers and up-tempo /
down-tempo. They've delivered an extremely solid mixtape that would be
at home on any self respecting scene kid's iPod. But I expect more and
after the 10 minute teaser mix we heard in advance of this, we know the
Purple Sneakers DJs can deliver more.
