Nikki Thorburn is a Sydney singer-songwriter who is starting to make her mark on the local music scene, and is definitely one to watch out for. With her distinctive voice, Nikki brings a fresh new sound into indie/folk music, with her debut EP To The Place showcasing off her unique talent.
Opening with track ‘Walking In Circles,’ Nikki introduces us to her sound. Possibly the best track of the EP, ‘Walking In Circles’ is a light, breezy track, with a toe-tapping chorus. With her vocals likened to that of Norah Jones, Nikki has a mature sound and an excellent song writing style, with maturity of someone beyond her years.
‘To The Place’ slows down the pace, with a greater focus placed on Nikki’s vocals. With slower beats and less instrumental focus, the song showcases Nikki’s unique voice as the main instrument, and proves she is just as good stripped back and acoustic.
‘Sunshine Freeway’ opens with some tinkling piano, and gives off a summery vibe. A perfect song for a road-trip or a day at the beach, it fits in with the vibe of the breezy EP perfectly.
Last track on the EP ‘Something Strange’ mixes it up a bit, opening with some solid drum beats. The track is quite mellow, but has a more mysterious vibe to it, giving the EP a bit more diversity which works well in Thorburns favour.
To The Place is a beautifully constructed debut EP from Nikki Thorburn. With summer approaching, this EP suits the mood and vibe perfectly.
