Matt Corby - Brother (2011 Single)

Matt Corby’s newly released single "Brother" is nothing short of incredible. A musical journey condensed into just over 4 minutes, the piece is dynamic, powerful and somewhat explosive.

The initial raw sounds of the introductory choral vocals and marching snare drum then melt into a delicate, lyrical, melodic phrase. This is all before Corby launches into a bridge infused with soaring, melismatic wails, and a chorus exploding with fierce, heartfelt energy. Considering the diverse elements explored within, the piece is impressively cohesive, completely traversing the notion of genre specification in music.

On first listen, "Brother" seems to dance around the mind. You think to yourself, ‘yeah, this is good stuff’. You know it’s good, but you don’t know why. And then suddenly, three listens on, it grabs you by the shoulders and shakes you really hard. It’s good stuff because you can feel it, really feel it, and that’s something that makes this song extraordinary. That is, its ability to captivate and intrigue, in an incomprehensive, other-wordly kind of way.

Anthem-like in nature, the piece is full, intense, and showcases the song-writing genius behind the rolling rhythms and daring melodies. Both the structure and the substance are musically interesting, no, musically exciting- for both the trained and untrained ear.

Corby seems to have an inner fire, and in "Brother" he unleashes it to the world- especially in the last twenty seconds of the song, which are definitely worth a mention and a listen. And a repeated listen. And another after that.

A beautifully produced, extremely solid track from a ridiculously talented musician, could not more highly recommend.
