Holy Fuck - Latin (2010 LP)

1HOLY FUCK album-headers

Latin

finds cheekily named Canadian instrumental post-rock electronica duo Holy Fuck (made up of members Brian Borcherdt and Graham Walsh) gleefully enhancing the blood flow to all significant extremities.

This excellent release arrives three years after the band’s second album LP, a collection of songs that went on to be shortlisted for the Galaxie Rising Stars Awars (the Canadian version of the illustrious Mercury Prize) - no mean feat for a band whose music can be as abrasive and 'in-your-face' as their moniker suggests.

On paper, Holy Fuck’s musical experiments sound like they should be unlistenable - for example the oddly named "SHT MTN" utilizes clattering out-of-tune keys over what sounds like saucepans for drums.
However, the band, and their production wizards, have mixed it to a sound that is actually exceptionally intoxicating as opposed to off-putting, transforming the clamor into brilliantly realised dynamic electro-noise pop tracks which revel in the unexpected.

While Latin definately won’t be to everyone’s tastes and it’s clear with a name like theirs it’s unlikely they’ll be topping the mainstream music charts anytime soon, there’s an energy and vitality to Holy Fuck that is impossible to deny.

Perhaps the greatest problem Holy Fuck face is the incessant bouts of sniggering at the juvenile joie de vivre which will undoubtedly accompany their title, which is a shame because Holy Fuck really are better than their name implies.
