The Hold Steady are back! With new album Heaven is Whenever in tow. It’s their fifth studio album and marks a real return to form for the band. In fact, I might so far to say as it’s a real contender for album of the year. I’ve given the album a fair few listens, hence the delay in the review, and I have yet to find a track I’ve grown tired of. Since their last studio album Stay Positive the band have said farewell to wine swigging, moustachioed pianist Franz Nicolay and have brought in a new keyboardist to fill the void. The only noticeable effect is a decrease in the piano within the mix, which is a shame. I’ll have to wait to see how the change takes effect live.
But back to the album, this really is the album Stay Positive should have been, not that I didn’t like that album, I just thought it was a tad shouty and could have done so much more – especially after the wonderful Boys and Girls of America. But with Heaven is Whenever they are back on track – with a great collection of tracks, each one as good as the one before. Lead Singer Craig Finn has stated the record is less anthem driven, but I would argue that there really are a fair few anthems stacked in there, the first song released "Hurricane J" is a perfect example of this.
The opener marks a noticeable shift in sound for the band; there is a real countrified feel to the track. Whilst they don’t stray too far from their wheelhouse, it’s nice to see a band experimenting with their sound a little. Craig Finn has moved from strictly spoken word delivery, and does “sing” for want of a better word on this record; and he does a fine job, his trademark delivery is all there, and as a writer he is still fitting a ridiculous amount of words into a 4 min song. After the opener, the band are back to their rockier selves, the guitar work on this album is really good, driving the songs along, and giving that great rock and roll feel. It’s good to see the band playing to their strengths and producing such great results. This album is much closer in sound to Boys and Girls, but it’s rockier and more assured – this is a band that is at the top of their game.
Those with a love for great rock and roll, and great lyrics, should definitely check out this band and album. You won’t regret it. My only hope now is they come back to Australia for a “national” tour.
