Frighteners - Frighteners (2012 EP)

Frighteners, a quintet who have been around for roughly four years and call Perth home, bring you their debut self-titled EP and it’s chock full of beautiful melodies, sprinklings of ambient, electronic sounds and all that is good!

Opening with lead single ‘Home’ (for which the band have also made a video), Frighteners is a step up from the usual alternative rock that can sometimes bore; these are songs crafted with attention clearly paid to things like dynamics, a range of guitar sounds - not just the same tone or sound all the time and there is a wonderful aggression in just the right spots from vocalist Ryan Adair. The overall sound of this EP is fantastic, lovely textures and the band are super tight - the time and effort they would have put into playing together, practicing, writing etc., completely shows.

The thing I love about EPs is that there really isn’t any room for filler - there’s usually 4-6 songs and they’re (most of the time) the best of what the band has written in that period. There is absolutely no filler on Frighteners, just well crafted songs like ‘3:44am’ and ‘Home’, for example. My personal favourite on this release would have to be ‘Off The Line’, closely followed by ‘Home’; I feel these best define the band’s sound.

A solid debut, I look forward to hearing future releases and how the band’s sound evolves over time.
