In their sixth album, Finger Eleven have delivered a competent yet lacklustre mixture of rock tunes that fall short of delivering anything spectacular. Although Scott Anderson’s vocals are strong, the material that he’s got to work with is riddled with clichéd lyrics that try too hard to be witty. “What doesn’t kill me doesn’t make me stronger” is one such pearl, as is “Love’s what you left me with, but I can’t believe you left me”.
"Pieces Fit" is a hook driven, electric guitar filled track with catchy, fun lyrics, though is nothing outstanding. Most tracks on the album fit the same mould. "Living in a Dream" is similar in style to their previous hit "Paralyser", to the point of almost seeming like a re-mash of the song. Same strong driving beat, same style vocals, same technique of emphasising certain words in the chorus. It’s likeable, yes, but original? Not at all.
"Good Intentions" is another bright spot on the album with a catchy chorus and plenty of attitude. "Life Turns Electric" is also redemptive for the album with its upbeat energy and cheerful guitars. "Love’s What You Left Me", is a bit mopey, with a hint of soft acoustic shoegaze guitar, and is somewhat more memorable than the other tracks for stepping outside the album’s formula.
There’s not all that much really wrong with this album, but unfortunately, there’s not all that much right with it either.
