There’s no such thing as cool any more. It’s been sucked in by corporations and sold back to us at twice the price. The 60s cool that’s encapsulated by Mad Men is all but dead and buried.
Until now – enter Every Second Friday.
This band, hailing from Melbourne and living in the rock n' roll scene, is cool. Rickie Lee Jones dropping the C-bomb cool. Josh Homme swaggering about the stage with a bottle of Jack Daniels in hand cool. Danko Jones driving a Cadillac into oblivion cool. A yearning, earnest and sexy cool that just oozes from frontwoman Sam Brown is something that has been missing from rock n’ roll for years and years.
This soulful blues rock quartet really do know the meaning of “chill” – put on “On My Way” and all your worries just seem to melt away into your whiskey on the rocks. Pretty Little Ditty channels the Boss or Fleetwood Mac, stepping up the rock factor but not sacrificing that lush harmonious sound. The production is raw but it suits – it has that intimate blues club feel to it that’s impossible to reproduce with ProTools and Cubase! There’s a devil may care attitude in the guitars that you just don’t hear any more in modern bands.
There’s a tender acoustic touch in the title track that grooves along with Ms. Brown’s voice just killing the chorus, firing on all cylinders. A jazzy ballad creeps up in "Lay it On The Line" with a contemporary adult feel to it while "Share a Little Piece of the World" wields massive guitar lines that sound like equal parts Black Sabbath and rockin’ Chicago blues. Toe tappin’ rockabilly is heard in "Burn Burn" replete with cheeky yet smooth-as-hell guitar licks and a sultry jazz interlude while they rock the twelve bar blues in the rockin’ and smoldering "Catch You Cry;" vocals on point with a rhythm section to match.
There’s some flat parts on the record but those are few and far between. I expect greatness from this band and nothing less. They aren’t bringing back the cool every second Friday, they’re doing it every day of the week and twice on Sunday!
