Ernest Ellis returns with this track from his as yet unreleased sophomore album. And he's not alone, joined instead by his band The Panamas. "Great Sky" opens strong enough, a solid pounding drum beat echoing the heart rates of the athletes in the accompanying video. With it comes a lingering and melodic piano riff, delicate and darting. Add to this mix some ethereal and beautiful backing vocals, it all makes for a blissful experience, with a wonderful cinematic feeling .
I am not normally a fan of too much production on a track, but I like the way Ellis' vocals sound on this track, there is a real lo-fi feel to it, if the vocal is coming through a haze, it's both full of character but also gives a nice melancholic edge to what could otherwise be described as relentlessly optimistic. The vocal brings a subtle balance, and kicks the song into another gear for me.
I must admit I have found it a bit of a struggle to reconcile the music with the video clip. I can't quite see the connection, but this doesn't detract at all from the quality of the track, you just might find yourself contemplating the link.
As a taster of things to come this single has definitely done it's job. As a fan of Ellis' debut I was already hoping for a follow up, but this little tantalising glimpse has made me hope the wait won't be too long.
