Sandhurst Town is the recently recorded LP from East Brunswick All Girls Choir, and is described by the band as 8 tracks of filth, crime, necessity and greed. Ahead of its’ April 2011 release and a year-long relocation to Berlin, during which the band will be “seeing sights, slashing wrists, finding new shackles”, EBAGC have made leading track ‘Essendon 1986’ available for free download through Departed Sounds.
EBAGC seem to have no aversion to distortion and this is certainly apparent in 'Essendon 1986', which results in the track having a kind of simple, dirty feel to it. The repetitive guitar rhythm builds tension throughout, which perfectly suits the growing emotion in the memorable vocals of Marcus Hobbs. It is this passion in his voice that makes me think they would be great to see live, which you can do if you’re at Melbourne’s NSC on December 17th, for a chance to catch EBAGC before they temporarily depart our shores.
An enjoyable 7/10
