The latest release from American rockers Deftones sees the band create an album showcasing just why they are the legendary band they are. Confronting and yet comforting, Diamond Eyes shows fans both new and old what Deftones are all about.

The title track and album opener "Diamond Eyes" thoroughly deserves its position. It sets the tone for the album, and almost the band. Weaving between melody and metal, this track is a perfect example of the skills the band has honed in their 20 years of experience. Raw lyrics matched with raw vocals accompany the leaden riffs as they invite the listener to begin their journey.

And what a journey it is.

The album offers up everything that is Deftones. From the chugging sounds of “You’ve Seen The Butcher” to the heavy bass lines and intense drum beats of “Beauty School”, the Deftones manage to blend it all seamlessly to create a polished piece of rock’n’roll gold.

Another stand out track “Sex Tape”, showcases the bands ability to write graceful lyrics and match them to chilled out, softer tunes. For anyone who thought the Deftones were a one trick rock pony, there is no greater evidence to the contrary than this song. Providing a break from the heavier songs, this track is also a great showcase for the vocal talents of Chino Moreno, which certainly cannot be overlooked.

“Cmnd/Ctrl” is another instant stand out. Combining savage guitar riffs with raw, angry vocals as well as a few well placed screams, this track is sure to be an album favourite.

The aptly titled “Risk” is also an attention grabbing track, and one that I feel will divide listeners. Some appreciate this track with its pounding beat, Moreno’s vocals and promises to “save your life”, as well as an impressive breakdown which occurs halfway through. Others may find it much of a 'muchness', and label it as unremarkable. However, even if it is the most forgettable track on the album, it is still a good solid Deftones offering.

The closing track, “This Place is Death”, is perfect closer, as well as a classic Deftones closing track. Closing the album on a somber, powerful tone, the track leaves the listener feeling that the storm has passed and the story is finished.

Diamond Eyes is set to be a huge success for the Deftones. Heavy, melodic, emotional and raw, this is what the Deftones do, and they do it well. The album takes the listener on a journey with the band as their guide, and upon completion one cannot help but marvel at what a talented guide they had.
