Album Review: Cub Scouts - Told You So (2012 EP)

Cub Scouts have had a pretty amazing year so far – supporting bands such as Ball Park Music and Loon Lake, as well as winning the ‘Song of The Year’ award at the Queensland Music Awards last month for ‘Do You Hear.’ So it’s only natural they follow up with an EP. Told You So is the first release from the young band, and is a refreshing taste of just what to expect from the quartet.

Opening on ‘Evie’ we are introduced to the jaunty sound of Cub Scouts, with emphasis on the keyboard and lead singer Tim Nelsons hypnotic, mellow vocals taking focus. There’s a similar type vibe on both ‘Evie’ and ‘Do You Hear’ making them both great singles to be getting Triple J airplay. ‘Scream’ is a gem of a song, showcasing a darker edge that you don’t necessarily realise until you move past Nelsons vocals and really listen to the lyrics.

There’s no doubt this is a solid first release from the band. Cub Scouts are good at what they do, and they’ve found their niche in creating ear-friendly mellow pop tunes. The only slight criticism is because Nelsons vocals are so distinctive it can be easy for all the songs to sound a bit too repetitive. Still, a perfect EP to be playing throughout the summer, with its relaxing and chilled vibe.
