Right from the get-go, all I could think about when I heard Catcall's new single was “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City”. With its neon-coloured artwork, synth
sounds and palm muted guitars, it seems like the perfect marriage with that decade
of decadence.
Sure, the 80s and its music are noticeable
with this song, but it pulls it off and manages to hit you on a gut level without even
sounding cheesy. It’s not exactly “A Flock Of Seagulls”, nor is it “Frankie
Goes To Hollywood” - it's better. Revivals are something that the 2000’s are
rapidly becoming renowned for with clothing, music, and television (Tim and
Eric?) and some things work better than others.
Any fans of notable Sydney band Kiosk will remember Catherine Kelleher, but when they hear this little disco
number, all prior knowledge seems to become completely worthless. If there’s
one thing she’s carried from those D-I-Y punk days (which featured Jack and Angie
of Circle Pit), it’s that being bold, brave and independent is what’s going to
get you far. Not just creatively, but probably within the industry. I sure as
shit hope this song is playing at every dance club in the city; hopefully the
full-length album keeps up the momentum of this brilliant pop gem.
